The GigaFire Project

The GigaFire Project is a set of interconnected research projects focused on quantifying the state and dynamics of wildland fuels as well as the impacts of varying fuel managements on fire severity, long-term carbon sequestration, and water quality. The overarching goal is to produce actionable data for land managers coping with the increasing scale and severity of wildfires.

Key Technologies

This project combines advanced modeling, remote sensing and GIS, and machine learning in a big data computational environment.

Who Are We?

The project is a collaboration between Dr. Jonathan Greenberg and Dr. Erin Hanan and their respective labs and land managers and scientists at CAL FIRE and the California Air Resources Board. Both Dr. Greenberg and Dr. Hanan are in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science at the University of Nevada, Reno
